Love Rugby? Wales v England should whet your appetite!

Mention the words England versus Wales and sports addicts from both countries instantly sit up and want to know more. Regardless of the sport or the people involved, the long-standing rivalry is such that supporters will want their country to come out on top. When you mention that the sport involved is rugby, the will to win is in danger of reaching boiling point!

On Sunday 26^th January one of the newest sporting challenges between the countries will see Wales and England Deaf Rugby teams lock horns for the 11^th time, with both teams keen to run off with the Broadstreet Cup. Even more important are the bragging rights, with the weight of their respective countries weighing heavily on the shoulders of the players.

Wales currently lead the head to head games eight wins to two, but England won the last game 21 – 8 on home soil, so the result is far from a forgone conclusion.

In a move that should see some attractive running rugby, the match is being held at the Cardiff Arms Park ground, where the new artificial surface ensures good conditions underfoot. It is the first time in deaf rugby history that an international match has been played on an artificial surface.

Wales Captain Gareth John commented, “The games versus England are always a fantastic occasion and the artificial surface should allow for a great spectacle.”

Deaf rugby is played without any alteration to the laws of the game, with the players using signs to communicate set moves. To be eligible to qualify a player must have an average hearing loss of 25Db or more in both ears.
